The green story of: GreenBook

What is GreenBook made of?

The FSC certified paper is coated in a layer of plastic. At the moment, we need a very specific type and quality of plastic to ensure that the pages write completely smooth and last for many years. This is different from a regular notebook, which you throw out maybe after a few months. In the recycling process, before cleaning and de-inking, the paper is strained through screens which remove plastic and glue.

The cover is made of solid plastic. I (Yagmur) have had the same GreenBook for more than 2 years. Because of this material, the cover does not have scratches or ruffles on the sides. It would be very difficult to achieve this with any other material, without having to add a plastic layer on top of it which limits recyclability.

How sustainable are the GreenBook pen and spray?

Magic Pen for GreenBook

Magic Pen for GreenBook is made of polypropylene in Germany with water-based ink. We provide refill stations for the black and blue pens. You simply put the pen in upside down and it will automatically refill itself thanks to a handy sponge system.


The bottle is made of PET which it is becoming more and more recyclable and can be turned into new bottles. The whiteboard spray, at use dilutions, is readily broken down in biological effluent treatment plants. It does not contain any PBT or vPvB substances or any substances expected to be bioaccumulating. From the UK.

GreenBook in the Circular Economy

The recyclable materials which together form GreenBook are mostly Technical Materials in the Circular Economy, as illustrated in above model by the Ellen McArthur Foundation. The other group, Biological Materials, only has 1 lifecycle. Only 100% biodegradable materials are in this group. In other words, they need to completely turn into harmless compounds like CO2 and nutrients under industrial composting circumstances. Not many materials in this category exist up until today, especially not with similar characteristics and quality to Technical Materials.

On the other hand, Technical Materials can have many more than 1 lifecycles if we manage to reuse and recycle them in their purest form. To illustrate; paper is biodegradable, it can only be recycled a limited amount of times – called downcycling because the quality gets worse every time. Technical Materials like aluminium and plastics can be reused and recycled potentially for hundreds of years in a row.

GreenBook’s lifecycle

Next to the material itself, there is the matter of lifecycle. It is difficult to quantify this entirely, although some parts of it can be quantified in a straightforward manner. For example, the amount of energy, chemicals and water required to recycle paper as well as the transportation required for collection and re-introduction to the market.

We make the choice between Biological Materials and Technical Materials with the use of the product in mind. For short-term use such as packaging, Biological Materials are perfect. Thus, our shipping envelopes and even shipping labels are made of recycled, nonbleached paper. Read more about our impact here. In the case of GreenBook however, our first priority is delivering a notebook which stays with you and grows with you your whole life. Considering the fact that the plastic polypropylene is one of the purest recycled plastics in Europe currently, we have so far found this to be a good match for the purpose.

With the future in mind, we are testing aluminium and biodegradable rings as well as covers made of recycled felt and cardboard. At the same time we are conscious about affordability. It’s like a dance. A journey which we undertake together with all GreenBook users whose feedback we actively discuss and act upon.
